The Snag Island Community Garden Inc. was born by local members of the Green Head and Leeman community.
We got the ball rolling by starting a committee, and we consider ourselves to be passionate, strong people.
Our committee knew that the community needed something to help people in need.
Through community gardening, the Snag Island Community Garden’s goal is to empower people, build social inclusion and provide pathways to sustainable livelihoods.
Growing a vibrant community hub, supported by the local council and residents, for the benefit of all persons in the community as well as the wider communities, is our vision.
Our community, as well as our adjoining communities, are currently living below the Western Australian poverty line according to the 2016 Census. We want to be a place for people to gather and garden in a peaceful environment. We aim to make sure that we do everything we can to make sure that no one goes hungry and can afford essential food at a reduced rate from our future “Food Bank”, as well as be able to teach the community how to live on a tight budget as well as encouraging new skills including, but not limited to, cooking classes using ingredients sourced from the garden etc. We are a group of residents, of varying gardening skills and ages, wanting to grow organic vegetables, herbs and fruit. As our members are so diverse in culture, it gives us the opportunity to come together to exchange skills and share knowledge. We hope the garden will be able to increase in size and membership over the coming years and that it will become self-sustaining.
Teaching people how to grow their own food will be beneficial for them in the long run and, at the same time, help to reduce the poverty rate.
One garden at a time.
All are welcome to join us.
