The Snag Island Community Garden Inc. was born by local members of the Green Head and Leeman community.
We got the ball rolling by starting a committee, and we consider ourselves to be passionate, strong people.
Our committee knew that the community needed something to help people in need.
Through community gardening, the Snag Island Community Garden’s goal is to empower people, build social inclusion and provide pathways to sustainable livelihoods.
We will be having tailored structured programs that will be focussed on helping socially at-risk individuals suffering from poverty.
Our goal is to support them to learn new skills through gardening.
As the saying goes
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day: Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
So the Snag Island Community Garden philosophy is:
It is more worthwhile to teach someone to do something (for themselves) than to do it for them (on an ongoing basis).
Teaching someone how to grow their own food will be beneficial for them in the long run and at the same time helping to
reduce the poverty rate.
One garden at a time.
